North Kanara has lot of varieties in terms of the people(religious sects) and lifestyle. Like other malnad areas, the food style here is closely linked to the geographical conditions. The chief crops of the district are rice and sugarcane, along with a great diversity of other crops. Tree crops include coconut, arecanut, cocoa, cashew, mango, banana, pineapple, Garcinia, and sapota; vegetables include onion, radish, cucumber, cauliflower, sweet potato, brinjal, and amaranth; spices include pepper, cardamom, ginger and nutmeg. North Kanara has huge list of recipes which are unique to it. For example, the Havyak Brahmins have their typical foods like "Tellavu" "Todedevu", "Melara","balehannu shavige" "Odappe","kocheegayi gojju","Holige","AppehuLi", korskayi gojju, korskayi tambli, ThambLi", Halasinakayi huLi (very famous in kalache-yellapur region of Uttarakannada district) etc. Likewise Konkani people have long list of delicious food items unique to them.
